I understand you're looking for a free option, but on G2A you can find Crysis 2 for just $2 off—worth the investment.

It's interesting I'm mentioning this, but Star Wars: The Old Republic includes a "free mode" that feels fairly flexible. (I haven't played the free version yet, but I did purchase it previously and found it reasonably enjoyable. It wasn't at the KotOR or TSL extremes, but still not bad.) If you're looking for alternatives, consider open-source projects like 0AD or other free-to-play titles discussed here. Mods are worth a try, though those that stand out are typically not for F2P games.

OpenTTD (Transport Tycoon Deluxe open source version) Wolfenstein Enemy Territory remains with many active multiplayer servers. Free to Play options are available on Steam (sorted by popularity or your choice): Steam interface > Games > Free to Play or the Steam store also features a FREE section with various titles: http://store.steampowered.com/genre/Free to Play. Desura offers a similar FREE section with more games: http://www.desura.com/#price=0

Short answer...no, there's always a catch with F2P. Your best bet if you really need games to be free is to get a PS4 and sub to PS+, then you can get legitimate games for free each month. Not a bad deal. Yes, the catch there is you need to buy a PS4 and get PS+ but theoretically you'll be getting 2-3 free games a month for as long as Sony continues to offer them, which should be years and years at least. If you have a PS3 and Vita, you get two free games for each of those as well. Xbox does it too for those with Xbox Live Gold but with fewer games and the games are almost always dreadful. On the PC side of things, Origin gives away a free game each month, but once again it's usually something I can't even be bothered downloading. The only "F2P" games I can think of that don't make me cringe are Evolve Stage 2, Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 and unless you want to play nothing but competitive games that's going to get stale quick. On the PC the closest you're going to get to getting GAMES for FREE are Steam sales. Then you can get full, quality games of all variety for a reasonable price. No one is going to give away anything that's really worth playing as-is. Free to play means pay walls, timers, and other silly restrictions that can only be overcome by spending real money. Suddenly that "free" game costs way more than if you just bought a legitimate game.

Ogre brought the discussion back and pointed out I missed mentioning GOG.com (great old games). They offer many high-quality, affordable DRM-free titles, plus a wide selection of completely free games: https://www.gog.com/games?price=free&sor...ing&page=1
