Anticipated performance for Fallout 4 on a high-end rig.
Hey there! I’m curious about how others have fared with FPS in various environments while playing Fallout 4 on ultra settings, especially with powerful rigs. To be frank, I’m a bit puzzled about why I occasionally see numbers in the 40s, 30s, and even the 20s. As a quick note, I’m using a 3440x1440 monitor (Predator X34 G-sync), so I know a lower resolution would be less taxing. Despite that, I still see those performance spikes. I’m assuming my setup is around 50 FPS on average at 60-70 during intense moments like battles or explosions. Does the higher resolution really impact performance so much? I understand my hardware is older, but I can’t afford a full upgrade right now due to budget constraints.
My rig includes:
- 4930k @ 4.4GHz, 16GB DDR3, 2400MHz
- Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 Gaming (x2 SLI)
- Intel 730 series SSD, 256GB OCZ Revodrive PCIe SSD
- 120GB hard drives at 7200RPM
- Corsair RM1000 PSU
- 100Hz monitor
I’m aiming to get the most out of this display but also want top-notch graphics. Have anyone found ways to tweak Fallout 4 settings for a slight boost without a big drop? I’m also comparing it to games like Battlefield 4, where I consistently hit over 120 FPS in the same resolution. In Witcher 3, I rarely fall below 50 FPS at that setting. Since I’m new to ultra wide or high-res gaming, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Could be due to the capped frame rate. In my case, because my GPU doesn’t reach full capacity, I experience many frame drops during demanding sequences. If it weren’t limited, I’d likely see more frames. This engine is the same as Skyrim, and in that game I consistently hit over 120 FPS.
I sometimes experience drops around ~35 FPS, even when I'm not in town. It seems like certain areas are causing rendering issues that slow things down. On other occasions, I run smoothly at 60 FPS, though I’m unsure what the maximum would be without caps. I won’t try to increase it, because doing so would break the game.
I typically run at around 60fps or higher in 2560x1440 resolution with one of my 970s. I'm still fine-tuning the settings because AFR2 triggers crashes for me. You have the GPU and monitor set up, so it's likely you'll see similar frame rates.
I restricted the FPS to 100 due to a terminal issue with 144Hz screens. Each frame runs between 50-100 at 1440p. The weakest were around 35, while one needed a high-end GPU. Better reducing graphical effects made a big difference.
Many gamers experience sudden FPS drops even with powerful setups. My setup includes 3570K at 4.8Ghz, R9 290x graphics, 1100mhz/1500mhz RAM, and a 256GB Samsung SSD. I often see lows around 42 FPS, though it usually stays near the cap. The latest AMD drivers boosted my performance noticeably, but some textures got corrupted, so I reverted them. Occasionally, when viewing through a scope at close range, I encounter unexpected lows—very unusual and not bothersome. Performance issues can stem from various factors: audio drivers, OS cleanliness, RAM/VRAM corruption, or other obscure causes.
