For Windows: Avast! Free Antivirus. Knowing your operating system and budget would be helpful.
Choose AVG or Avast for free protection. Use Malwarebytes or rely on common sense with Malwarebytes.
I rely on AVAST and have never encountered problems. The only advice is to avoid Avira AntiVirus. I used it a few years back and faced several infections afterward.
Antivirus takes up unnecessary space and uses system resources. Using a browser with adblock performs better because most threats originate from fake downloads, email attachments, and forced installations on websites.
I use AVG Free but if you prefer spending money on an antivirus, I suggest Kaspersky. I’ve already tested Bitdefender, which is highly regarded as a great antivirus but it consumes a lot of system resources. If you’re interested in trying Kaspersky, there’s a free demo available here: http://www.kaspersky.ca/downloads
The antivirus isn't really a strong tool, I'm not suggesting you delete it, but depending too much on it won't help. Updates take time, and most threats are zero-day or new. Protecting your OS means using multiple layers. My setup includes key scrambler (anti keylogger), Avira, WinPatrol for monitoring, and KeePass for accounts. I also recommend a firewall like Comodo, though they often involve piracy concerns, so I avoid them.
I don't rely on antivirus software, yet I utilize Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium, Sandbox, KeePass, and browser plugins such as Adblock, WOT and the provided link.
