Consider getting WebofTrust, because I’m saying why attempt to block a possible infection when you can stop it at its source. Weboftrust is open-source, community-based, and users rate websites; if it has many negative reviews, it gets flagged and alerts you before you proceed. It’s essentially a lifesaver, especially since it’s free.
An antivirus is a program designed to protect your device from malicious software. I haven't used one in years and only encountered false alarms. The few threats I've faced were harmless pop-ups, possibly from Norton.

Avast Free is a solid choice. Many of my grandma's screensaver installers have been caught and removed, which is good news.
I've managed to adjust just the popup's active time, not fully turn it off.
