I intend to swap my motherboard and CPU to another platform while keeping everything else unchanged. I own an OEM/system builder disc for Windows 7. There are rumors that the activation key is linked to the motherboard, but others suggest you can replace any three components at once without causing issues.

1. Will the existing key function on my new motherboard/CPU?
2. If I transfer it with the old hardware to a friend, will it still work for them?

You may have to restart the key via Microsoft.

I switched from a gigabyte motherboard/AMD processor to an ASUS motherboard/Intel processor, and the change worked smoothly without needing to contact Microsoft.

I installed my laptop's HDD using the original Windows key and added it to my desktop as a boot option without needing to reinstall or reactivate anything.

I think I'll give it a shot and if it fails, I'll reach out to Microsoft support. Appreciate the quick responses.
