Download and set up Magical Jellybean Keyfinder: https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/ This tool retrieves your Windows product key for you. It saves the key in the registry and converts it back to plain text. Many similar programs exist (including a VB script you can run), but this one functions well. I tested it with Windows 8.1 yesterday. Note that embedded BIOS keys don’t work with this method (such as those from Dell or HP).

The "Product ID" is located in the System Properties of the computer, while the key is not found there.
