My friends and I have been using Google Hangouts for a while, but we want something better. We need options to create separate chats for different groups, support audio calling, and enable group chats or calls. Would Skype be a good alternative?

Skype handles everything well, yet it has some issues. If you're experienced, Teamspeak can manage it, though it's more complicated to configure. The same applies to Mumble, but with fewer problems.

It looks like when a host stops responding from a call, about half of the participants struggle to rejoin without exiting the chat and being added back in right away. This occurred twice yesterday, though it isn’t a significant issue.
