I've been checking out the z790 Carbon WiFi for some time now, but there are issues with the M.2 shields. The new one won't fit unless I remove a shield, which isn't straightforward. I'm trying to decide if the z790 is worth it compared to the z690, especially since I'm getting the 12900k and thinking about DDR5. Also, my PC isn't meant for gaming—I mainly use Unreal Engine 5 and Blender.

We aim to make the SSD heatshield visible for a cleaner look. You're considering using either the heatsink from the motherboard or the SSD's own heatsink. There seems to be no functional problem, so you're probably aiming for a more stylish motherboard option to match the lightsabre heatsink.

Yes, aesthetics. The trouble is there are 3 M.2 slots and I have 2 SSDs, so I guess I would have to leave the shield that comes with the MB off.

You can always use Dremel or a mill to create a hole in the MB shield as well.
