Hello everyone, this might seem unusual, but I'm facing a decision about choosing a motherboard for my upcoming work PC. I originally wanted the MSI B550M Mortar. I thought it was a solid option and will use it mainly for running ACAD and GPU simulations. My IT admin dismissed my request and chose a Gigabyte B550M DS3H AM4 instead. At first glance, this seems like a less desirable board. If someone wanted to defend the MSI model as superior, what arguments would they make? Plus, they also gave me a less favorable scenario... my thermal performance is now a concern.
Motherboards aren't designed for ACAD and GPU simulations. Your CPU, RAM, and GPU work fine. Motherboards are big platforms that accept various components as long as the required slots are available—everything is okay. Of course, if you're really pushing your limits and need better power handling, opt for more powerful boards. For your situation, the DS3H should suffice. Unless you can prove a 25% speed boost or something...? I've tested many motherboards, from budget office models to premium gaming ones, but no noticeable performance gains beyond overclocking.
