Analyzing and fixing hard drive issues
Hello everyone, welcome! I'm just starting out and came across an issue with my PC. Whenever I turn it on, it keeps running disk scans and checks. **I've allowed it to scan and fix itself, but once I power it back on or restart, the same message keeps appearing.** This problem began yesterday. I did shut it down forcefully a while back, but that was several weeks ago. I haven't visited any suspicious websites that might have caused a virus. I'm considering it could be related to power problems, since my PC was connected to the wall (but not powered) during your father's roof work. I've looked into fixes on YouTube and basic web guides about Windows scan tools, properties settings, etc., but nothing has worked. I'm wondering if resetting the PC specifications might help: Windows 11 Home, Prime Z690-P motherboard, 32GB DDR5 RAM, 1TB SSD, Crucial P5 M.2.
It seems unlikely the issue was your mind's focus. More likely, Windows Update is trying to fix something. It may take some time, so let it run the disk check. This should resolve the problem. (This is my take since you didn't mention allowing it.)
Thank you for responding, yes I did forget to let it run so my bad on that. However when I do let it run it only takes under 10 seconds as it shows 7 seconds in the image, right after those 7 seconds are up it immediately finishes and goes back to the login screen. Would this just be an issue that will go away over time?
Thank you for your reply. I didn't realize the post mentioned scanning and repair, but after that it jumps straight to the login screen. After reviewing the control panel maintenance, it keeps showing red and saying "Restart is required." Once I restart it and wait, it continues to display repair and disk scanning messages.
Only occurs when a key is pressed. If nothing is touched, it continues and performs the check.
Hello Squinty, thank you for your reply. I restarted my PC and it kept showing the same issue—no key presses, just a return to the login screen. After checking the control panel, it still asked for a restart, which led me back to the login again. I repeated this several times before posting, and I’m wondering if there’s a problem. I’ve allowed the drive to scan after each restart, but it still behaves the same way.
It might be one of the fixes you applied that automatically cancels it. You can run it manually in a command prompt window to see if it still works and isn’t marked as needed. Just open cmd with admin rights and type chkdsk to get a clear view of what it does.
Hello once more. After using chkdsk with admin privileges, I got an error saying access is denied. It suggests either insufficient rights or a locked disk. I attempted /scannow too, but it didn’t help.
