You're just starting out on the forum and found it hard to locate the right section. I'm not sure if you've covered all your PCIe lanes yet. You mentioned adding an Elgato 4k60 pro and possibly a sound card later, plus a GPU upgrade down the line. Do you already have all your lanes filled? Adding more components might affect your GPU performance. Thank you! Also, can a CPU handle both PCIe 4.0 and 3.0 lanes at the same time? Your setup includes a Ryzen 9 3900x with an Asus board, which should support Gen 4 speeds for your drive.
The system features 24 PCIe lanes originating from the CPU: four designated for the first M.2 slot, sixteen allocated to video cards (either one X16 or two eight-port slots depending on the motherboard model) and four for the chipset. The chipset generates additional PCIe lanes, usually placed in a second M.2 connector (two or four lanes) and/or an x16 slot containing only four lanes, plus some x1 ports. Your board includes three PCIe X16 slots; the first two derive from the CPU and utilize those 16 lanes. A single video card in the first slot receives all 16 lanes. Inserting a second card into the second slot converts both to x8 lanes. Expect minor performance drops in certain games—around 1-2% maximum, possibly a few frames per second loss. The lowest lane slot holds four lanes from the chipset and shares bandwidth with an x1 port directly above it. Installing a sound card there might impact capture card speeds if it captures raw video, but it’s worth trying. M.2 slots will maintain PCIe 4.0 speed if the SSD supports it. If your video card only supports PCIe 3.0, the two X16 slots will transition to PCIe 3.0.
