AMD Witcher 3 issues with display drivers crashing.
I’m experiencing a significant problem with Witcher 3 lately. After restarting with New Game+, I already had about 60 hours of playtime before this and never crashed before. Now, every 30 to 90 minutes the game becomes unresponsive, yet audio remains clear—conversations and enemy sounds are audible. I’m planning to exit the game and suspect an AMD display driver issue. When I close it, the application simply stops without any interaction. This is quite frustrating, and I haven’t found a resolution yet. I’ve checked forums for similar issues, mostly seeing NVIDIA reports, but no AMD solutions appear. I’ve tried various fixes but none worked.
Below are my details: I’m using a crossfire setup and suspect this might be related. I also notice flickering icons, which I’ve managed to handle over the past 60 hours.
I attempted several fixes:
- Updated drivers to previous versions
- Installed the latest stable updates
- Applied beta driver versions
- Cleared the Display Driver Uninstaller between changes
- Modified profile settings in the Witcher 3 GUI
- Disabled ULPs in the registry for power savings
- Followed AMD’s crossfire optimization guide
- Ran a one-time update from the updater
Despite these steps, instability persists. The crash seemed to take longer than usual—over an hour instead of the typical 30 minutes.
My hardware specs:
- GPU: Gigabyte 7870 HD Windforce (2x in crossfire)
- CPU: Intel i5-3570K (OC to 4.1 GHz, stable)
- Motherboard: Gigabyte Z77-HD3 1155 Socket
- PSU: Corsair 700W Modular
- SSD: OCZ-Trion 100 240GB
- HDD: 1TB WD Blue + 280GB older RAM (Corsair Value 8GB)
- Case: Corsair Carbide Air 540
- Mouse: Zowie FK1
- Keyboard: Corsair K90 (non-RGB)
- Monitor: BenQ XL2411Z and a lower-res HP model (1680x1050)
If anyone has suggestions or solutions, I’d really appreciate it. Please feel free to ask for any additional information—I’m ready to help. Thank you in advance!
Consider removing and readding the game, then try disabling Xfire. Launch the game again to check if the problem persists. This approach is based on common experiences with Crossfire or SLI setups.
OS? Have you checked compatibility options? Have there been any OS updates since your last stable game session? Have you increased the power limit for those cards? Did you disable the OC on the CPU? I faced a similar problem with Space Engineers where the game would auto-tab itself, making navigation impossible but allowing full interaction and saving/loading with hotkeys. That turned into a driver issue. Since you've reinstalled everything, consider trying the steps above. It might also help to examine the event viewer for unusual errors. As some users suggest, it can still leave lingering issues. You could manually remove almost everything related to AMD or ATI.
I also faced the same issue with my old Sapphire R9 280X. To fix it, I adjusted the side switch of the button, though I’m not sure what changed. It only updates the UEFI BIOS, but it resolved the problem for me—no crashes afterward.
