I recently upgraded my 3900X to a 5950x. With both chips, idle temps stay between 55 and 65. I’m not doing heavy overclocking—just standard Auto OC via Ryzen Master, and my RAM hits an XMP of 1800. The 3900X used a 240 AIO cooler, but I thought it might have faded, so I switched to a newer 360 cooler. It seems fine now. Back then, similar chips ran hotter, around the 30s to 60s. If I crank the fans to max, temps drop to 48 or 49. My concern is whether this is normal for this chip. I started with a simple setup, but now it feels awkward during calls—temperature spikes make me fidget.

Ryzen idle readings aren't very useful. My 5900X sits near 45°C with a 25°C room temperature on a custom loop using a 280mm radiator. We're discussing Tctl or CPU temperature readings, which are estimates based on CPU temps plus an adjustment—higher means lower actual temps. What matters is gaming and full workload temps, like Cinebench or productivity apps, which I see around 75°C. That's great. The peak temps I experience are during downloads, especially when transferring large files like game updates (dozens of GB at 110MB/sec over a 1Gb connection), reaching up to 86°C.

Is the AIO free of dust or just a bit dusty? The Ryzen 9 and 5000X series tend to handle dust well, so it shouldn't be a big issue. The AutoOC doesn’t seem too valuable since the chips can adjust their speed quite effectively. I’m not sure if this is what you were checking, but I’ll do my best to assist.

According to @PDifolco, it doesn't really matter. For general low temperatures, you can undervoltage the chip.

I owned a 5800X that was famous for its intense performance, but it would spike to over 90°C under heavy use on every core with a Corsair H150i and a fully customized setup. The Ryzen 5000 series are similarly powerful but can get excessively hot at times.

They don’t operate at full heat. They get hot only when you attempt to push them beyond their limits without proper cooling. Both of my Zen 3 processors drop to mid to high 20s.

You're observing higher CPU temperatures than expected, especially when idle. The standard benchmarks show a temperature increase of about 8°C compared to your measurements. Have you tried adjusting power settings or voltage levels?

TCtl/Tdie confirmed. PBO/CO and boost over ride are active. Testing with Themalright Ultra 120 Extreme Rev B on 5600X and FC140 on 5900X.

Completely new and ready to use, the old 240 model still holds a decent amount of water but for a young child using an AIO it runs smoothly without any sound, meaning it’s either full or completely empty.

I’m considering the 5950 with the choice of using Curve Optimiser, which I think will lower the voltage. In reality, I likely won’t need any overclocking here. Instead, I’ll enable Auto OC on the 3900x to extract a bit more performance before deciding that AM5 won’t suit me this time. I plan to wait until next year for a better deal on the 5950 and revisit AM5 then.
