am I misunderstanding something about the compatibility of my system? i want to know which amd cpus support 16gb ddr2 memory. my setup uses am2+ and runs am3 platforms, but i’m not sure if i need an am3 processor for that configuration. can i install a 16gb ram module on my current am2+ board, or is this limited to am3 models?

The motherboard can only accommodate RAM up to 8GB of DDR2, and the CPU isn't involved in this limitation.

Yes, you can boost the supported memory capacity using a BIOS update. This motherboard was released before DDR2 4GB DRAM support was available.

4GB DDR2 memory cards cost a lot and have limited help, usually. For stable performance you’d need an Opteron platform (not the standard AMX port) that supports DDR2 ECC.

not every 4gb ddr2 dimmer is an ecc device. some sellers offer sets of four standard dimmers for around $30 to $50 on ebay. others have reported using 16gb units with amx systems. if your motherboard seems to be the issue, that’s likely the case, though it’s not certain.

I don’t need an AM3 board to reach 16GB if I can install an AM3 CPU on my existing board and use DDR2 memory.

The RAM cap is set by the motherboard design. An Am4 processor doesn’t alter this.
