You're planning to get your son a new computer. It's important to know how modern AMD CPUs and older PC games perform today. The term "old" can mean different things, especially with retro systems. Workarounds like enabling game modes are still common, but you may need to adjust settings or use emulators for compatibility.

Game mode existed only on the Threadripper lineup since they were built differently, and Windows struggled with them due to design changes. Consumer Ryzen models avoided this problem entirely.

Thanks for the note. It seems you've been sticking with Intel for some time. I've come across a few concerns about their products, so I decided to step back. This definitely opens up more possibilities for me, as long as it offers something better than what's currently available.

The main problems affected only a handful of TR4 CPUs due to their multiple NUMA nodes. Ryzen performs equally well, if not better, than Intel counterparts.

He’s using a setup made from my previous components—7700K and GTX 1070. A new unit will go to his mom’s place (the reason for the change, since it doesn’t need an upgrade just yet). I had planned for a 9400/2070 path, but I’m not locked into that yet.

A Ryzen 3600 would be a superior choice. The 9400 offers better value, while the 3600 provides more performance per dollar compared to the 9400.

The 9400 isn't just an improvement over it; it's more like a step down, with some areas worse than before.

Why create him with two PCs? Here are some ideas: 1. Let your son transport that existing PC around, forcing him to exercise while playing games. 2. Disassemble and repurpose the current components to build a compact ITX system that can be moved easily. And the optimal choice 3. Purchase a gaming laptop under $1000—it's manageable today. Selling the old setup might save money compared to buying two machines, offering comparable performance. The Ryzen 4000 series seems impressive, and i7 prices are likely to drop sharply soon.

9400 represents a minor revision, not a full reduction. Compare it to the Ryzen 5 3600 or even the 3700X for better insight.
