AMD or Intel? Which processor is better for the Ryzen 7 5800X compared to the i5-12600KF?
You need to compare the two processors based on your needs. The Ryzen 7 5800X offers better performance for gaming and multitasking, while the Intel i5-12600K is more affordable and still decent for everyday tasks. Choose based on your budget and how much you plan to use each feature.
Don't rush into an AM4 setup unless you're sure; especially if you're planning a premium build. Hold off a few months for AM5 or opt for an LGA1700 right now. Most likely, the 12600KF performs better than the 5800X3D in general.
5800x offers some advantages over 12600 and Intel boards generally. Budget B660 models tend to support higher power Intel chips like the 12700, while 12600 or cheaper options usually don’t. A key perk is avoiding Windows 11 installation—you can continue using Windows 10 for a while, unless you really want the new OS. AM5 is expected in about two to three months, but be aware it might bring some stability challenges initially, with frequent BIOS updates and occasional bugs. DDR5 memory is also pricier, and it’s unclear if DDR4 options will exist for AM5 sockets. For now, sticking with AM4 is safer; it’s reliable and the 5800x will keep its value. Users with 4-6 core CPUs, such as the 1600x, might consider upgrading to 5800x in a few years once AM5 matures. At that time, refreshed AM5 chips with hardware enhancements could be sold as complete kits including motherboard, CPU, and RAM.
However, the 12600k(f) seems more suitable for the same or lower budget. The 5800x underperforms compared to the 12600k overall, and the 5800x3d trades poorly against it. Avoid the 5800x—it’s not a good value. Also skip the 5800x3d unless you have an AM4 motherboard.
It's a space heater. The next post will be called = "5800X running hot on 360??"
