Ballistix handles 4000 cl16 at around 1.5v as a more typical mid-range setting. This is essentially the average in the 3000/3200 range, possibly reaching 4600+ on a solid board. At these speeds voltage drops to 1.6-1.7v and active cooling becomes essential. Running at 1.6v is safe for most kits, though 1.7v carries some risk and going above 1.7v is quite dangerous. The Hyundai DJR chipset can manage these speeds but with poor timing, while the 5000mhz cl19 Neo forza kit works well with DJR instead of standard boards or Samsung B Die options. That’s why I focused on Ballistix—because it’s reliable in this range, but other brands often fall into lower quality tiers.

Zen 3’s design is centered on DDR4 technology. The IO die exists as a distinct component, but the Infinity Fabric connections between dies depend heavily on memory integration. To adapt for DDR5, the entire Core Complex architecture and its links would need a complete overhaul, splitting current chiplet manufacturing into a short-term solution that demands new motherboards and chipsets. Laptop components can support DDR5 because they are not built from chiplets—they are solid, monolithic units developed consistently across generations. Even before the 6nm transition, AMD was able to modify memory controllers, which helped pave the way for this shift.

AMD has previously indicated their upcoming AM5 CPUs will support memory overclocking. It seems they might be anticipating a decline in AM4 availability while DDR5 options become more common.
