Hi everyone, I was just curious if anyone knew whether AMD was planning to restart their loaner CPU program again, similar to what they did with the Ryzen 3000. I recall they previously released an older Athlon model using a B550 chipset, but now it seems they aren<|pad|>. I own a B550 board that I purchased during a sale, knowing I’d likely need to upgrade its BIOS later. I also have access to an Athlon 220GE, but if it doesn’t work out, I don’t want to spend time trying to remove it from someone else’s system. I’m wondering if such a CPU might still be available in the firmware, though it’s unclear unless they’re not planning another loaner initiative. It seems unlikely they’d send a very cheap CPU if they’re not aiming for another round, especially since pre-5000 B550 boards probably used Zen 2 chips instead of sitting idle.
I saw this online and wasn't sure, but others said they already included zen3 support in the zen2 mobos. Does your device have a flash updater? Then you should be okay.
Yeah, I did actually see that Asrock's BIOS update in August says it adds support for Zen 3. That doesn't necessarily mean that my board will be drop-in supported, though. I'm out in Australia so even though I bought it back on the 12th of October, there's no way of knowing how old the stock was. It could have been back from when they first got them back in July. I just looked actually and there's a new update that went up a few days ago. I wonder what that update did.
They're likely to continue doing it. Affordable low-end Zen 2 boards can be used. The BIOS updates are ready for B550 models, and it's also possible to apply them on mine boards even though I haven't flashed yet. Plus, you don't always require a loaner CPU. Some MSI boards, like the one I own, can update the BIOS without a CPU or GPU present, so you don't need a loaner CPU either.
They had to pay more for BIOS flashback but it offered extra perks. I'm looking at the cheapest Zen 2 options. The 3100 is an option, but it lacks built-in graphics which isn't ideal for APUs or systems without a GPU yet. I'm leaning toward the 3060, hoping its experience will be better than the 2060 Super before I commit to a used one.

That's a thoughtful question. If you're considering an APU or are still waiting on a graphics card, I remember hearing similar stories. Using an Athlon 220GE for a build meant for someone else worked temporarily, but after the BIOS update it started looping. It seems the older CPUs might not be supported with newer BIOS versions, especially those requiring Zen 3 features. I'm hoping for the better side—my 5900X is due tomorrow, but the cooler is delayed and the RTX 3060 isn't out yet. It should take a while before I can test it.
