I've got a Ryzen 5 3600 in my server, and I've been considering the Ryzen 9 5900X as an upgrade since its price dropped. I used to prefer Intel, and I think AMD CPU costs tend to rise once newer AM4 chips aren't released. At least it seemed that way with older Intel models.

AM4 has its own changes. AMD provided options to upgrade most AM4 boards, and top processors will stay popular for some time. If you need an upgrade, go for it.

I've noticed the prices for their CPUs dropping a lot since 2020. It's a bit frustrating, honestly—it makes me hesitant to buy again from them.

CPU costs seldom rise. They usually decline gradually, while motherboard prices begin increasing once a system reaches end-of-life.

It would bother you because most consumer goods don’t gain worth over time unless there’s a special situation like a chip shortage or high demand, or if something is deliberately hard to obtain like a rare collectible. Only in those unusual cases does value last longer, such as certain older Intel X series chips. Those usually stay cheaper than their original price.

I got ya! Thought you were looking for value increase. I’ve been I the same spot, bought a used 3600 for the ‘awesome’ price of $215 right before prices started to normalize at half that. Tech is something that it really pays to have patience with, but by nature isn’t a very patient hobby lol.

Higher-end models should stay pricier because slower users avoid them. Expect more expensive memory modules since they’re prone to failure. Upgrading old systems often leads to wasted money, especially if newer parts break or newer features are needed. It’s usually a bad deal to switch platforms; better to keep up with faster, cheaper options. This means progress—avoiding the outdated 1960s computing era.
