Hey everyone... I've been trying The Witcher 3 lately and the FPS isn't running smoothly. It keeps jumping between 45fps and 20fps in 4K ultra mode (without any hair effects, and when I'm stationary it stays at 45fps, but when I start moving it drops to 20). In 2K ultra with hair effects, it's steady at 60fps when I'm still, but falls back to 20 when I move. I found a fix by setting the refresh rate to 30, which gives a consistent 30fps and makes the game playable without issues. Still, I wish I could get above 40fps for smoother performance. I'm not sure what's causing this problem. Also, I tested with my friends using dual GTX970 cards—FPS looks much more stable in 4K ultra, even beating other games like GTA V, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, etc. So is there something wrong with The Witcher 3? Please help me figure it out!
Could you adjust the excessive tiling options for Hairworks? Otherwise, this might not work.
Make sure you understand this: Witcher 3 performs better on Nvidia graphics cards. However, a 390x CF isn't sufficient for 4K Ultra. It's far from enough. Start by lowering the depth of field from ultra to high—it makes a noticeable jump in frames per second with almost no visual impact. A heavily overclocked 980 Ti can barely maintain 60 FPS on 1440p Ultra when using high depth of field and just Geralt-only hair effects at four times tessellation. If you choose to use Hairworks, I strongly suggest reducing the tessellation to 4x. Anything higher won't be visible graphically and will hurt performance. Running Hairworks is not feasible under these conditions. 4K Ultra becomes completely unplayable without a high-end GPU like 980 Ti running at near ultra settings.
You're working on high-end configurations. Problem 1) You're using ULTRA mode. Problem 2) You're tackling the 4k challenge in Problem 3). Witcher 3 is a demanding title, especially at ultra settings at 4K resolution. It needs powerful hardware—like Titan X, 980Ti, or Fury X—to maintain around 60 frames per second smoothly. It's one of the most visually intensive games ever developed. First, disable Hairworks and reduce tessellation. Then, lower your overall settings to a balanced mix of ultra/high/medium for stable performance.
