AMD APUs paired with additional RAM options
Hi just a quick question. I read a lot about APUs and how ram speed influences their performance but how about quantity? If I were to add 16, 64, 128 GB RAM would performance increase on par with a dedicated GPU or at least significantly? Thanks
Integrated GPUs are not fast enough to take full advantage of extra memory. Usually the memory allocated for an iGPU is constrained (which is why). Performance mainly depends on how quickly the GPU core can read data. If memory access is slow, speed drops until a certain limit is reached. After that, more memory won’t help because the core can’t use it. Also, if your data doesn’t fit in the available RAM, swapping becomes necessary. When you have enough RAM to store everything, adding more memory brings no improvement.
Amd APU reaches its limit at 16GB RAM paired with a 32+ system. The impact on FPS isn't clear—it won't match the performance of a dedicated GPU with 16GB.
