Mohd Mamat shares his thoughts on EVO performance. He believes it won't reach 4.8 to 5.0 even with a top board and superior power phase and thermal design. He tested 4.8 on an 212X before on FX-6300, so he thinks it's possible unless the extra cores really improved things. He emphasizes the significant difference in heat management.
I plan to assemble my initial gaming PC soon and am searching for the highest possible overclock for an AMD FX 8350 equipped with an EVO 212. I frequently work with FX systems, so here’s what you can anticipate from pushing these units to their limits. Earlier on, before the line matured, FX 8320s could reach impressive speeds similar to FX 8350s, and 5Ghz overclocks were not uncommon for either model. Now that the process is more advanced, such high speeds are rare. The FX 8320 typically caps around 4.6Ghz, while the FX 8350 usually reaches about 4.8Ghz, and the FX 8370 averages 5Ghz. The key difference lies in the chip binning: FX 8320 uses the least, FX 8350 offers average binning, and the newer FX 9xxx series provides the best performance.
Regarding thermal output, both the FX 8320 and FX 8350 will generate significant heat. The FX 8370 remains a powerful chip, but overall it produces less heat thanks to better binning and adjustments. On a Hyper 212 EVO with an FX 8350, you’ll likely reach around 4.2 to 4.5Ghz at most (with dual fan settings). For higher overclocks from the FX 8350, consider advanced cooling solutions like NH-D15 or a high-quality closed-loop water cooler (such as H100i GTX). In practice, even with these upgrades, the FX 8350 rarely exceeds 4.8Ghz.
If your goal is to achieve top-tier overclocks, opt for the FX 8370 and ensure you have excellent cooling in place. Additionally, a top-tier PSU (at least 80+ Gold), a premium 990 motherboard with ample VRM support, and at least 8+2 power phases are essential. You’ll also need effective air or liquid cooling to reach the 5Ghz+ range consistently.
If your goal is strong performance from the FX 8350 without pushing it to its limits, consider using a Cryorig H7 (priced similarly to the Hyper 212 EVO but with superior cooling) or a Cryorig H5 (one of the top mid-range air coolers on the market). Pair it with a high-quality 970 gaming motherboard. A premium 970 board should include VRM cooling and typically offer 6+2 or 8+2 power phases, with 8+2 being ideal for the FX 8350's eight cores. A solid 80+ Bronze or 80+ Gold power supply will ensure smooth overclocking up to around 4.5Ghz, handling most tasks efficiently.
