AMD 7900 XTX Performance Issues
AMD 7900 XTX Performance Issues
I recently upgraded from a 2070S to a 7900 XTX. The PC build includes a Ryzen 7 5800X, PowerColor 7900 XTX Red Devil GPU, G Skill 33 GB RAM, Corsair RM1000X motherboard, ASUS Tuf x570 Pro drives, an Intel 500 GB M.2 NVME, a 1 Gb Samsung 970 Pro, and some standard 7600 RPM hard drives. The OS is Windows 11. I noticed a modest performance increase since I mainly play Minecraft, which is better optimized for AMD. I observed around 10% more frames compared to my previous setup. I ran DDU before installing and had DOCP and SAM enabled. At 1440p resolution, I expected over 120 FPS on the 7900 XTX. UserBenchmark showed my GPU score was lower than average for that model. According to Adrenaline, the clock speed is increasing smoothly and stays under 60°C. The GPU reaches 100% utilization while CPU usage remains low, suggesting it’s not CPU limited. Anyone have suggestions on what might be affecting this?
Recent motherboard BIOS updates and chipset driver releases from AMD are available. The standard 5800X may limit performance of the 7900XTX at 1440p resolution. Comparing a 5800X3D to a 4090 at 1440p shows significant bottlenecking—around 50%. To improve slightly:
- Turn off Multiplane Overlay MPO.
- Disable ultra low power state ULPS.
It wasn't a CPU issue. My 3900X reached its limits near 120FPS in Warzone 2, especially with the NVIDIA card that has more overhead. AMD cards usually handle CPU-heavy situations better, and his 5800X is significantly faster than mine. In normal MW2 Multiplayer I didn’t run into problems exceeding 160FPS, though Invasion mode felt similar to Warzone 2. It might be that the memory timings are too poor, causing the CPU to lack bandwidth (my friends’ MSI board does this when auto-setting timings). Knowing his game settings and the mode he played would help.
It seems like there might be a RAM problem. Micro Center currently offers a deal where you receive 32 GB of DDR5 free when you buy a 7700X, plus $20 off the motherboard. This could mean upgrading to a newer CPU and RAM now.
I've experimented with various configurations, but the main issue remains unchanged—adjusting settings doesn't significantly boost frame rates. It feels like Freesync is still active even though I've turned it off, and benchmarks confirm this isn't the problem. I'm puzzled about how RAM could impact performance so greatly. I've noticed many 6950 builds achieving 1440p at around 200 FPS on high settings with older CPUs, suggesting a CPU limitation rather than hardware. Ultimately, I think my game should throttle CPU usage in titles like WZ, but I'm not reaching near 100% utilization, especially on AMD boards where COD usually performs better thanks to optimized memory access.
