Yea, I'm sticking to 2x32GB for now until it's gotten into a better place (hopefully without the need to replace motherboard down the line). Anyway, I've pulled the trigger on ProArt X670E Creator - I guess I'm going to be the guinea pig... it won't come until end of December anyway because stock in UK is picked clean...
Marrond, did you receive the ProArt X670E? Have you tried any Thunderbolt 3 or 4 devices that use PCIe tunneling? USB4 can handle all Thunderbolt 3 capabilities as I understand, so it should function properly? Thunderbolt 3 cannot support multiple 4K displays like Thunderbolt 4 does? I’m still unsure about the multimonitor functionality through USB4 ports, how it interacts with Thunderbolt hubs (TB3 or 4), and what the actual setup would look like.
Regarding the DP input on the motherboard, there’s only one port, so it should limit you to a single screen unless your graphics card and chip support multiple displays over that connection. I saw a YouTube clip showing an ASUS graphic mentioning 1 or 2 4K screens, but it seems USB4 isn’t Thunderbolt 4 compliant—just regular Thunderbolt 4. How does this compare to the specs of Thunderbolt hubs?
The Maple Ridge chip in your X670E is indeed Thunderbolt 4 compatible, yet I haven’t found any Thunderbolt branding or references to it in ASUS materials. It’s possible it’s only Thunderbolt 4 certified, possibly using chips from Intel without the Thunderbolt licensing. This makes me wonder if you’re dealing with a genuine Thunderbolt 4 device or something mislabeled.
Your concern about hubs, daisy chaining, and overall compatibility is valid. The JHL8540 Maple Ridge controller supports Thunderbolt 4, but without clear documentation confirming this, it’s hard to say exactly what you’ll get.
