alternative to steam cloud
I rely on Steam Cloud to keep my game saves in sync across different devices. It often fails to work smoothly, causing unexpected errors even when it seems fine in the background. Sometimes it reports everything is up-to-date, but when I switch computers, it shows the save is outdated. I’m frustrated because I’m tired of manually copying files or wasting time checking syncs. Could there be a better way for Steam to handle this without extra effort?
I don't possess a straightforward answer, but I can try to infer the reason. Essentially, there isn't a uniform way games save and refresh their data files. Each title uses varied methods and places for storage, while operating systems have distinct folder layouts. Updates happen at different intervals, making it tricky to know when Steam should sync with cloud storage. If you didn't close the game properly, Steam might miss the newest patch. This isn't a simple process.
Exploring further, I found a self-hosted project named ludusavi. It seems to be well-taken care of, and the reviews I’ve seen are mostly favorable. Since I haven’t used it myself, I can’t share my opinion, but it appears to be a straightforward solution.
GOG advertises cloud saves, though it's unclear whether this applies to all games or just titles in the STeam collection.
I previously utilized Dropbox or OneDrive to back up my save files outside of Steam.
