Alternative to Outlook 2007
Alternative to Outlook 2007
I've been using Outlook 2007 (32) in a Windows 7/10 (64) setup for over a decade, and I was planning a clean upgrade. I wanted to switch to something comparable that supports data migration (PSTs, etc.). I thought OpenOffice would be ideal, but it lacks a built-in mail client. While I’m okay with Office 365 for general needs, I really need an offline mail application for domain mail. Having Outlook as a standalone app outside Office would be great. It’s time to improve the sometimes unreliable version.
I've heard rumors that the new outlook app would be cloud-based only, i.e. no local storage file for old mails.
Btw - Here is a list of alternatives for the MS outlook app

Mozilla Thunderbird offers a viable option, though with certain limitations.
Determine the type of server your email account uses. If it’s IMAP, you can simply log in with Thunderbird and proceed without importing PST files.
For Exchange Server, Thunderbird may not function properly without significant adjustments, if any.
If you’re using POP3 or have many offline messages stored locally: you might attempt importing by transferring your offline Outlook messages to a temporary IMAP account (such as gmail or outlook.com) and then syncing them into Thunderbird. After that, move the desired messages to your local offline folder.

Thank you for the link and responses.
I'm currently using a mix of IMAP and mostly POP3, with the latter configured to delete messages on the server after download. I have a lot of old emails, totaling nearly 4GB in PST/PSTarchive, which I usually keep unnecessarily. A clean-out would be necessary before moving anything to an IMAP system. If Thunderbird is selected, there are tools for converting PST to MBOX. The main issue would be installing an older version of Thunderbird so the import wizard functions properly, after which an upgrade could be done.
As mentioned, Thunderbird seems like a strong option. I'm considering temporarily adjusting Outlook to keep copies on the server and using Thunderbird for migration and adjustments. I don't remember if rules and accounts are stored in PST files from 2007, but I know they've changed over time—anyone have confirmation?
Quick update...
Could have used a conversion utility but decided to simply install v31.8 Thunderbird which did import directly from Outlook. This was mail and contacts only. I know it doesn't import rules and could not find a way to import accounts. Not a biggie as I was intending to adjust ports, passes, formats, and credentials to be a little more current. It seems I've progressed as far as possible migration wise so I'll update to latest version (115.7.0 I believe). Thanks again for the suggestions!
