Alternative solution for unpredictable CTD in games! GPU RISER SPECIFIC
I've spent six years crafting computers and recently faced an issue I'd never seen before. I assembled a new gaming setup, and for the first time, games would freeze without any warnings or errors, yet I never experienced a crashing blue screen of death. Here are my components: Torrent Meshify 2 compact standard edition Corsair RM750x Gold Edition (2021, modular) MSI 3060 TI Ventus 2x OC edition (v1) Torrent Flex B-20 GPU riser (Gen3) AMD Ryzen 5900x (base speed) Kraken x63 standard edition Artic MX-4 thermal paste (2021) Msi B550 Gaming Plus Motherboard 2x8 TeamGroup Elite 3200mhz ram (base speed) 2x140mm and 1x120mm outtake fans (two of which are RGB fans) 2x140mm and 1x120mm intake fans Asia Horse Cable Extensions for all devices 18AWG At first, games would run for a while, but eventually crash to desktop. I also observed strange audio and visual glitches between sessions. From what I know, lower-tier programs like Risk of Rain 2 would crash less often but still under heavy load. Titles such as Grounded, Elden Ring, and Red Dead Redemption 2 would load slowly and then stop abruptly, with inconsistent performance each time. Oddly enough, even Heaven's benchmark would run smoothly for hours without any crashes, though it would occasionally stutter. I attempted various fixes—using DDU, rolling back a DD version, updating or downgrading BIOS, reinstalling Windows cleanly, adjusting power settings in Windows and Nvidia Control Panel, reseating cables, running games in safe mode, removing RGB software, updating AMD chipset drivers, etc. But then it struck me! My board and CPU setup supports PCIe Gen4 devices, yet I hadn’t enabled them, thinking my Flex B-20 was only for 3rd generation. I also realized my PCIe cable extension was connected to the PSU’s pigtail, which might have caused issues during high-voltage operations. After changing the X16 Gen speed to 3rd generation, all problems disappeared. In short, keep in mind that GPU riser cables aren’t usually Gen4 by default and you might need to adjust your system for such add-ons.
