Everyone I've found online says HL:S is a bad port. Unfortunately everyone I've encountered talking about it either is using windows using Directx, or doesn't mention their OS, which likely means they're running the game in Windows using Directx. But the game also has a native Linux port using opengl, and I haven't found a single comparison of that version. Are all the graphical bugs still there? Are some of the physics and ai bugs fixed by using the linux version. Can soemone please test out the linux version of Half-Life Source?
It seems this game was likely created by fans, offering a fresh take. The comparison to HL:S feels more like a nostalgic upgrade rather than a major leap, and the Linux compatibility is unclear. Generally, it should work on most systems without significant performance drops compared to the original.
So the issues with Half-Life Source go beyond just visual problems. There are many more problems to consider. I’d never suggest playing HLS instead of HL. Plus, understanding the engine makes me think those graphical issues aren’t exclusive to DirectX. Here are my top three suggestions for enjoying Half-Life. The most authentic experience would be playing the original in Xash3D, which feels like a superior engine (and VSync is a nice touch). If you prefer something updated but still close, try Half-Life MMOD on Steam – it offers better graphics and gameplay while keeping the quality high. If you’re up for a big change, Black Mesa is worth it. It’s more expensive, but it’s definitely the best game I’ve ever played. Just keep in mind it changes the overall feel, so jumping from Black Mesa to HL2 might be confusing.
