Hey there! It's the first day here, and welcome! My neighbors brought me a laptop they want to switch from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. They don't have the product keys anymore, and since they're not tech-savvy, I'm trying to figure out if it's even possible to upgrade an unlicensed version. Can I do that? Thanks!

It's feasible to obtain the ISO from Microsoft for Windows 10 for free, but you'll notice a watermark at the bottom right corner and won't be able to customize settings.

If they’re open to paying a small amount, you might find a key on eBay. At the last update it was around $2. The key in question is for a laptop—typically it’s either built into the device or stored in the BIOS.

This would be the approach to take. Unless the ladies require additional licensed tools beyond casual use on platforms like YouTube and Facebook, it doesn’t make sense. It would be a misuse of their funds. Impressive!

Inspect the lower part of the machine. Certain tablets display the Windows logo on a label attached to the back near the bottom.

Secure their data, perform a fresh installation of version 10, restore their files and applications. Purchase an inexpensive eBay access code and pay the $5 fee. Keep it secret from the neighbor—thanks for the good karma!

All my laptops include the Windows key in the lower panel, near the battery and RAM. A Win7 key should function on Win10.

The issue with cheap eBay Windows keys revolves around their legitimacy and value. These keys are often not genuine and can lead to security risks. They may not be volume licenses, which means they don’t grant proper usage rights for your PC. Using them can result in your key becoming invalid after a short time, forcing you to buy new ones repeatedly. If you prefer avoiding extra setup and potential issues, it’s better to invest in a legitimate license or consider free alternatives.

Yep, volume keys. It seems most people have success with them. I've had on on mine for a couple years with no issues. As for having to set up again if it does get blocked, I'd guess you could just enter another key.
