Hello, a while back I shared my thoughts and came to the same idea that my MSI Krait Gaming board might have been damaged during an unexpected update. The CPU inside is an Intel i5 6600K Skylake 6th generation. I’m looking for a replacement but haven’t found any options since newer models don’t support older Skylake chips—it seems those boards aren’t commonly listed for LGA 1151 systems. It still works for light games and functions as a media/multimedia setup, so my goal was just to get it back up without replacing the whole board. I’ve spotted similar models for sale around $100; though that feels like a bit of a stretch considering it’s a used unit from about seven years ago. I’ve tried shorting the CMOS but haven’t had success. I’m hoping you can point me in the right direction or share any insights on whether these newer boards are truly compatible with older CPUs. Intel motherboards typically accommodate only two generations per socket, with some rare exceptions supporting three. The 6th generation uses LGA 1151 version 1 and is limited to the initial models. It seems you're not targeting the correct model. On eBay, boards labeled "Z170" are generally under $100, with one available for around $63. Deeper searches might reveal options as low as $50. If you explore H170 or B150 variants, prices could drop further. Used units after about three years lose value and remain stable until roughly six to seven years old, when scarcity increases their cost. If this is near now, prices above $100 seem reasonable.
Thanks for your feedback. I haven’t ever pushed it overclock because it never slowed down during gameplay. I guess I wasn’t sure if I was being pushed into the used market or what my options were. I’m planning to place this order since it’s available in the states and costs around a hundred dollars. Thank you for letting me know that the only choice here is used or older boards. It includes a digital optical cable.
