When upgrading, it's best to avoid using unauthorized keys. Changing the product key on your system won't grant you access to Windows 10 if you started with a non-genuine version. Stick to legitimate sources for any key changes.

I've been thinking about it, it seems more affordable than purchasing Windows 10.

We cannot discuss unauthorized software, but I managed to upgrade a Windows 7 system today without any problems. It confirms it’s a legitimate, activated copy of Windows 10.

To ensure stability, obtain the Windows 8.1 ISO from Microsoft, perform a clean installation using the official key. For Windows 10, download the ISO and upgrade via it. Your current key will then become a Windows 10 key, ready for future clean installs—this may even eliminate the need for a new key.

I believe this applies only to installations that relied on an OEM Loader for activation, such as Windows 7. Windows 8.1 pirated versions typically use KMS spoofs.

You bought a Win8.1 pro key recently, but you plan to use it on your KMS 8.1 HTPC. If you attempt to extract the product key from Windows 10, what will happen?
