I'm preparing a new PC and received all components tomorrow. The GPU RTX 480 is still pending delivery via Super/TI, so I'll use my older 1080 Ti until I finalize the choice—it's close to a new release. Asus ROG Strix Z790-E GAMING 14th Gen Intel i9-14900K with DDR5 48GB dual sticks and a Gen5 SSD 4TB are on their way. After reviewing the manual, I've gathered some insights: using Gen5 SSD might affect PCIe lanes (up to 8x or 1x X4), but it shouldn't impact the GPU since bandwidth remains available if installed in the main slot. I'm considering swapping the Gen5 SSD in slot 2 to slot 3 for better performance, though it may still work with a Gen4 setup. The X4 on-chip technology could help, but speeds might be limited. Let me know if you need guidance on any of these options.

It'll be okay overall; they typically lose only a small percentage with 8 lanes, as shown in the TPU tests for a 4090. I'd decide based on how likely you are to hit storage bottlenecks. If your tasks gain from a PCI-E 5.0 SSD, you can tolerate losing GPU lanes. For most users who rarely face storage delays—like casual gamers—the choice of PCI-E 4.0 M.2 doesn't matter much.
