All my games began to lag or stutter after going off online.

Hi everyone, last night I played Bioshock Infinite smoothly. Today I went back to my PC for work and later tried Fortnite with a few friends. The game was very unstable—constant stuttering, lag, and FPS drops, even at the lowest settings. At first, I thought it was due to the recent season update, so I switched to Monster Hunter World, which also had the same issues. Bioshock Infinite worked fine last night.

I didn’t make any changes to my PC, didn’t update drivers, and didn’t install new programs. When I opened Task Manager, I saw my GPU was constantly at 100% across all games. I assumed that was the main problem.

After a full Windows reinstall, the issue still existed, but now it wasn’t using the entire GPU. I adjusted settings in the NVIDIA control panel, uninstalled the NVIDIA HD Audio Drivers (some reports suggest they can cause similar problems), turned off NVIDIA overlay and the game task bar, and even switched back to an older video driver. Nothing resolved it.

I checked temperatures—GPU was around 50 to 60°C, sometimes reaching 70°C in newer games—and my storage drives were nearly empty.

If anyone has any tips or solutions, please let me know.

GPU temperature remains between 50 and 60 °C; with newer games it may rise to 70 °C. The PSU is approximately 3 to 4 years old. I plan to include these notes in the post as well.

How much space is occupied by the SSD? Is the game stored on the HDD or the SSD? Defragment the HDD.

The SSD contains 170GB with 240GB used, while the HD holds 1.38TB with 2TB occupied. All my games are stored on the HD, and I ran a defrag last night.

How thoroughly was the HDD already defragmented before you performed the defrag, and how regularly do you run it? Doing defragging infrequently followed by a large defrag can often damage a HDD, particularly if it isn't a premium model. Unless you provide additional recent activities, I would assess your HDD's condition with a comprehensive diagnostic test.

I clean it regularly, about every two to three weeks. The diagnostic check on both the SDD and HDD showed no issues.
