Intel offers a wide range of lake architectures, making it tricky to grasp what’s new. Alder Lake is considered the 12th generation, while Rocket Lake and Tiger Lake are earlier models. Each has distinct improvements in performance and efficiency. The letter suffixes at the end of CPU names indicate which lake they belong to.
Alder Lake is basically general improvements + extra small cores on top of Tiger Lake which only gets 4. Rocket Lake is basically Tiger Lake's design with double the core count and 14nm They don't, the letters only represent whether the CPU has iGPU disabled, multiplier unlocked, 5w or 15w (default) or neither base power limit.
The variation comes from architecture tweaks and clock speed enhancements, boosting performance metrics like Instruction Per Clock. This results in a more efficient processor or one that runs faster. We know for sure that Alder Lake will likely include additional cores without compromising the performance of existing cores. No matter how quickly they operate, having more cores generally boosts overall speed—provided they don’t interfere with one another. The extent of improvement really depends on the type of tasks the software requires. For gamers, more cores might enhance performance in certain titles, especially with the Big.Little architecture that keeps other cores functional. This design could also make future games easier to run efficiently. However, we’re uncertain if Alder Lake will surpass Rocket Lake in gaming performance. Recent reports suggest its core performance is significantly lower than Intel’s expectations, possibly making it comparable to or even inferior to Rocket Lake. I don’t think there’s much reason to wait for Alder Lake to deliver noticeable gains. Even with DDR5 technology, it won’t outperform the current fast DDR4 modules at launch, so meaningful speed improvements will take time. For laptops, Alder Lake should offer clear benefits compared to previous models, but for desktops, we doubt it will make a substantial difference.
