When considering whether to use a water cooler or an air cooler for overclocking your CPU, it depends on the specific situation and requirements. Both options have their advantages.

It relies on the specific coolers being compared. For instance, the 212 EVO matches with numerous 120mm AIO liquid coolers.

Generally, you won't require it unless you're planning an overclock by a few hundred MHz. Standard air coolers should suffice.

It varies based on the desired level of overclocking and the CPU's characteristics. Generally, unless you need very high voltages, air cooling works well.

I'm considering upgrading my 6600k to a 4.0ghz processor.

I keep my 6600k running at a comfortable temperature, haven't pushed it overclocked yet. However, during stability tests I often hit above 50°C and the fans are only about 50%. This happens even with the Noctua NH U9S cooler and its 92mm fan. If you opt for a high-performance air cooler, I believe air cooling will work well. I think Skylake made it easier to go with air cooling compared to Haswell did.

Sure, I'll look for a larger air cooler that supports overclocking.
