After relocating to a new setup, no longer have access to HDDs.
I have two hard drives (both Seagate mechanical drives) I've used for documents and a Plex library for a few years now with no problems. This past week I put my new PC together and when I moved the drives over neither is spinning up. It's not just that they're not showing up; it's like there's no power. I did have some issues getting the new build to post initially and the fix involved turning the power supply on/off several times (12-15 times over the course of a couple days) and I did this without thinking about the hard drives still being connected. My fear is that this has somehow damaged both drives. Does anyone have any experience with similar issues? I've read up on some potential fixes, but other than replacing the PCB and transferring the firmware, which I'd REALLY rather not have to get into. Anyone have any suggestions?
The PSU cables aren’t the usual type on the power supply side; the older versions might have been wired differently and caused damage to the drives. This would explain why switching to the correct cables now stopped the drives from working. Yes, it seems the issue was that the drives were shorting the PSU and triggering protection each time.
I might test the drives in a separate external dock or another PC just in case, but if they fail... quite poor performance, unless you have a significant budget for recovery services.
It might be possible, but you need to examine all the limitations related to your current drive model before proceeding with the drive.
