checked out the X58 Mad Lads, wow, some impressive features. worth stepping into X58 territory? the 1680 V3/2 is beyond my budget—set a strict limit at $350 just to stay focused. I’m aiming for around $300 USD and really want to master older hardware while maximizing performance. I’m pretty confident on an Xeon and hope everything works out. If I can snag a good deal, I plan to sell the build for $400 to a friend. You seem knowledgeable about X58 and X99; maybe X99 is a bit pricier, but within my $300 range. From what I see, the X79 could be tougher to get a solid price for. Any advice on where to start with this budget?
X79 offers better value compared to other options. Hexacore CPUs are affordable, while the mobile sockets cost a lot on both X58 and X79, but you gain significantly more performance potential with X79. X58 suits those who want extreme overclocking and enjoy the challenge of balancing BLCK settings, though it lacks smooth usability. The mobile sockets remain costly, especially for an older platform that can be easily surpassed by modern chips. X79 is increasingly resembling what X58 provided before Ryzen reached its peak (a cost-effective way to build a powerful overclocking setup).

They offer solid VRAM with cooling, use the real X79 chipset (cheaper options often have generic chips like B45), provide decent expansion slots, and give you a lot of BIOS customization options. However, the BIOS lacks voltage controls, so you can only adjust the CPU clock speed up to its stock limit—like around 4.2GHz for the 3930K. RAM performance is also constrained. Compared to stock builds with full voltage support, this setup still delivers solid gains but falls short of what a modern motherboard with full control would offer.
Another thing to note is that these boards are usually older models—several years past their prime—and that can lead to reliability issues due to aging capacitors, even if they claim better durability. They're also pretty pricey on the used side.
On the plus side, many of these boards support NVMe storage booting. If you manage to get that working, paired with a solid 8-core i7 chip and plenty of L3 memory, the voltage limits won’t be a major hurdle. These motherboards vary in quality with the PlexHD X79 Turbo (V1.03) being the best I've found. I actually have a system running one of these boards and it runs quite cool, including the VRM (its got a beefy heat sink and one of my case fans is in close proximity). You mention overclockng, however, and I have to disappoint you as these boards do not support overclocking in their (ancient) BIOS. You CAN edit the BIOS to enable these advanced features - there is an active Russian community for this - but its obviously not the simplest route. There are, however, options to overclock your RAM and those do work fine, along with various other useful utilities for adjusting TDP, number of active cores, etc. Long story short, its a good board and I've been surprised by how well it performs. But its not really for overclocking. Other boards may (and will) vary. My only other suggestion would be to get an OEM board i.e. something from HP or Dell, etc, but those too wont have overclocking options and they are notorious for using non-standard pin-outs - everything from the powersupply to the front panel IO (a nightmare).
