Advice on selecting a suitable laptop manufacturer in 2024
Hello friends
if you can purchase a new laptop before Black Friday, there are two main user groups:
Basic: MS Office, Adobe Reader, Skype
Developer: Java, Linux, Git, IDEs, Jenkins, Docker
Discussion about preferences
Which manufacturer would you prefer first? Asus, HP, Lenovo, Dell? And why?
Of course, it depends on your personal experience and maybe what your family or colleagues use.
Thank you for your understanding
Consider the issue from another perspective, starting with the essential needs of your app's games or tasks before assessing how those demands affect your laptop's capabilities. After identifying suitable laptops that match your software's needs, refine your choice by selecting models that offer competitive pricing in your area, as prices can vary significantly depending on location and availability.
Since the pandemic has impacted consumer behavior, brand loyalty is less important now because many laptop manufacturers have faced challenges with quality and customer support.
I visited Alienware for three main reasons... 1) I wasn’t able to assemble it myself, 2) I noticed many good reviews about Dell’s support that I wish I could avoid, and 3) they offer a hassle-free return policy.
I actually went through #3 already... ordered a 16" model with a 4070, didn’t realize it was wrong until I opened the box. The 4070 felt like an unnecessary upgrade over the 4060, and I thought I’d spent too much. I also paid Dell to install more RAM and storage when I could have done it myself.
So I wrapped it up... returned it without questions, received a full refund, and then chose the 18" model with a 4080 (a big improvement over the 4070) that includes four M.2 slots. I kept the minimum specs and upgraded it later at a discount. At 2560x1600 resolution I didn’t see a reason to pay for the 4090 upgrade either.
It’s been a while since I bought a prebuilt PC, and I didn’t immediately notice the errors... but they’ve all been fixed now. Much happier with my portable computing setup.
Thank you for your responses. I agree until certain aspects, but I prefer to begin with the manufacturer first and then select a specific series. For instance, starting with manufacturer X and then choosing series ABC. For using the minimum hardware over time:
2 SSD TB
32 GB RAM
The processor will be discussed later
A dedicated video card is recommended (to prevent heat in the motherboard and allow the video card to use its own RAM)

Thanks for the insightful experience with Dell.
