Advice on network
Hi everyone, I'm setting up a Unifi Dream Machine in my network with two APs. I'm using a Dell Precision 7910 running Proxmox and want to know if a Cisco 3850 can work for my homelab. Also, I need PoE support for the APs even though the Catalyst series is no longer supported. For security, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Are you planning to add more machines later? This switch should function well, though it may require significant power. Will this be a training environment or a production system that other devices depend on? If you're focused on studying Cisco, consider using Packet Tracer instead of real hardware. GNS3 allows virtualizing various vendors' equipment, but you'll need to locate the correct boot images yourself.
My aim is to create a learning space and a home lab for testing Proxmox. We'll run various virtual machines, including Windows Server and TrueNAS for backing up photos and videos. My dad and grandmother both capture lots of images and videos. I also intend to host Rocky Linux in Proxmox and possibly use VM or LXC containers.
Staying inside the UniFi system makes more sense. Just order the switches.
I had to choose carefully because of financial limits. A Unifi switch and AP would have cost between $400 and $500, depending on the model. I opted for a Cisco Catalyst 3000 series switch as a budget-friendly option. Right now I’m not employed due to being disabled from birth, but I’m focusing on studying for my CCNA and working on projects in my home lab using a Dell Precision 7910 to bridge my IT knowledge gaps. My goal is to gain experience in system and network administration.
