Advice for those just setting up a PC or notebook
Hi, welcome to your new PC setup! I'm here to help you with everything from choosing the right software to basic maintenance tips. Since this is your first "Monster" system, feel free to ask about everything you're unsure about. Your specs look solid—great choice with the GTX880m and 16GB RAM! Let's get you started. Thanks for sharing your details.
I found a nice laptop but don’t know what to say or suggest. I usually check ninite.com to get my essential software, then install my games :3
I rely on seven zip files but they seem nearly identical. It’s always one million programs for a single task, I suppose. Why not share the types of programs you’re interested in and we can recommend alternatives? On my PC, I mainly use Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, Steam/Origin, games, Skype, Razer Communications, and Teamspeak.
ninite works well but consider handling tasks manually since it only sets up 32-bit versions. I recommend evaluating your requirements and choosing installations accordingly after thorough research. My preferred software lineup is quite unique and likely differs from others, shaped by my experiences over time. Feel free to set up a VM and test programs to see what fits you best. My usual setup includes: Steam, Origin games, Teamspeak 7Zip (uncompresses most files), Java 7 64-bit Chrome, Firefox (due to chrome issues), Skype, Notepad++, VLC, Handbrake for conversions, Virtualbox (for games), MS Office (Work), OpenVPN, Dropbox, Google Drive, and more as needed. This configuration mirrors my work laptop but includes extra management tools for professional use.
These are the tools that often come to mind when I begin configuring my system.
Required: Chrome or Firefox for browsing, Steam for gaming. VLC is top media player, Notepad++ works well for text editing. WinRAR/7-zip helps with archives, AVG Antivirus is essential. Java is needed for programming or Minecraft. Microsoft Office is useful for work or school. Adobe Creative Cloud supports design tasks; ninite.com is a solid option. My new tech friend thought it seemed suspicious, but it's completely safe.
