Administrator access needed to create a folder on my storage device.
Hello, This is going to be a bit of a tricky one to explain. I have an SSD with windows installed and a couple of other bits, I then have a 1TB HDD with all of my other junk on it. I created a folder called program files to as my default directory to install all my programs on my PC. This was around 2 years ago. Up until yesterday I have had no issues. I have a VPN that required updating, after trying to update it multiple times and it failing and rolling back to the previous installation. So tried to UN-install and do a fresh install. This just gave me an error. I tried to manual go into the folder and deleted that VPN folder, and this is when i noticed that its saying i need admin permissions to do this. I am the only user so the user is an administrator. Looking all over the place online i see guides about how to take control of a folder. Right click properties, security tab, advanced. This is where it gets weird. I can see the owner (Administrators (Desktop - 9Gxxxxx) with the change icon next to it. If i click change i get a pop up that says "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device" I click yes, and then everything is now greyed out. The same happens if i click change permissions. I tried taking control of My D drive by following the same thing and clicking "Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object" As it works through changing the child directories it gets access denied for that folder. If i look at the Security tab for the Program files folder System and Administrators has all the allow boxes ticked, User has only Read and execute, List folder contents, and read ticked. If i click edit i get the pop up asking to allow changes click yes, and i get a new window with permissions for program files, with only 1 tab (Security) and again everything is greyed out and i can't change a thing. Any light that can be shed on this would be much appreciated as i have spent a long time trawling the internet for solution's and the only ones i can i get road blocked by the issues i have stated above. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me
These permissions are identical across drives, folders, and files, and I have complete authority. The only concern I have is that reinstalling might have triggered a conflict. My settings remain active, and I can turn on full control and modifications without issues since I’m using an admin account.
Alternatively, you can remove the folder using a program named "Eraser." Proceed with caution, as incorrect actions may cause issues.
Press Win+X, select A to launch the command line with admin privileges. Execute the provided commands to adjust permissions.
I removed it and reinstalled it using another tool. But that’s not my main problem—I don’t want to repeat this each time a game or program gets updated, nor do I wish to delete or change files.
