Adjustments required for routers and modems
I have a simple concern. My ISP provided a modem-router combo (Be 8800n) that uses a phone line. Can I connect a router from Walmart into the WAN port and configure it? I’d probably need to set up the network myself. Also, would using a high-end router cause any issues?
That should function properly. The main router will likely only improve Wi-Fi performance slightly, not significantly for wired connections. Consider switching the ISP device to pass-through mode, allowing it to operate like a modem so it handles both nat types correctly.
You’re likely going to have to change your extra router to AP mode and connect it to a LAN port; the WAN port will be needed only if you’re using an external modem.
He is discussing linking a combo's LAN connection to his extra router's WAN port, probably for better connectivity.
