Just finished installing a new build a couple of weeks back, everything seemed fine until today. I was using my BIOS (ASUS z390i) and accidentally adjusted something by mistake, which led to higher CPU temperatures—from 32C-33C at idle to 40C-41C. After sitting quietly for a while, the temps rose to 50C-52C, then the fan turned up before dropping back down. I’m not sure what I did and didn’t have the expertise to reverse it or find the right settings. While checking RAM speeds, I explored various options and probably hit on a setting that caused this issue. Once I logged off and returned, the temperatures returned to normal. This isn’t for gaming or overclocking—it’s just a basic workstation built with new parts. My system runs OSMI 3.1 (SFF), ASUS z390i BIOS 3006, i5-8500, Windows 10, Samsung 950PRO M.2 512GB, Pure Rock LP cooler, Corsair SF600 PSU, and a quiet 140mm case fan.

I originally planned to install an i9-9900K but found the BIOS had already been updated for that model (version 3006). It worked fine at first, but the i9-9900K is a high-performance CPU and required more cooling. I switched to an i5-8500 with a 65W TDP, which ran much quieter and cooler in the case for several weeks—until today when I made a change. The BIOS changed from the box to the case without further tweaks except two custom fan curves I set three weeks ago.

I’m wondering if there’s a way to reset the BIOS back to its original defaults, keeping version 3006 intact. If so, would that undo the changes and bring it back safely? I’m worried about losing progress or breaking something.

Regarding BIOS settings, I noticed two options: EZ Mode > Bottom Default (F5) and Advanced Mode (F7) > Exit > Load Optimized Defaults. Which one would restore the system to its original state?

My experience is that I can understand what components fit together and troubleshoot, but BIOS updates are tricky. If you’re unsure, walking me through each step would help avoid mistakes. I’m hoping for a solution so I can get back to normal temperatures quickly.

Adjusting RAM speed, such as activating XMP, typically doesn't influence CPU temperatures. It's possible you've activated Multi-Core Enhancement or an ASUS pre-built overclock profile. Pressing F5 or choosing 'Load Optimized Defaults' should achieve the same outcome. All BIOS settings should reset to their original factory values. You might also want to revert any custom fan curve settings.

Rascal, thanks for your reply. I reviewed the bios settings and confirmed Multi-Core Enhancement in AI Tweaker is set to 'Auto-Let BIOS Optimize'. Should I disable it or leave it enabled? Also, you mentioned that pressing F5 or choosing 'Load Optimized Defaults' would reset all BIOS configurations back to factory defaults. That makes sense. I want to be sure this applies to my BIOS version 3006 as well—would changing it affect the version and require an update to bring it back to 3006?
