Hi, this weekend I purchased a new system and attempted to overclock the Ryzen 5 1600 to 4Ghz. After adjusting the voltage to 1.35v in Ryzen Master and enabling overclocking, I ran Cinebench or Prime95 and it would reboot after just a few seconds, taking less than a minute. I also tried increasing the voltage to 1.45v without success. The stock cooler works fine, and the temperature isn’t the issue. When I pushed the cooler to full capacity during overclocking, the temperature rose to around 80 degrees. The highest stable speed I achieved was 3.85GHz at 1.37v, and even 3.9GHz wasn’t stable. I’m not sure if it would work at 1.45v, but I wouldn’t risk it for regular use. MOBO is the Gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3. Do I miss something and should I tweak other settings? I see on YouTube that some people claim to reach 4Ghz with this processor.
It's partly because of the mobile optimization and partly due to the lottery. The B350 is a budget model, essentially lacking many features linked to higher overclocking potential. To push performance further, you'd need an X370 board, which includes extra heatsinks, wider traces, and other components needed for managing heat and resistance at high voltage/current levels.
Yes, in room temperature conditions, people are achieving stable 4.1GHz at acceptable voltages with the standard Wraith coolers on X370 boards, but on the B350 it's uncertain at best.

It’s not just about the silicon—it’s about real-world performance. Every CPU behaves differently, and even AMD recommends a max voltage range of 1.35-1.375v for continuous use. Future BIOS updates might improve things, but I’m not holding my breath.
By the way, the stock cooler can’t cope with those voltages or temperatures. Reaching 80°C is too high; these CPUs throttle at around 75°C. In your case, the temperatures are also a concern. The X-series CPUs handle up to 95°C thanks to a 20°C margin, while non-X models max out at about 75°C.

Ive also got amd ryzen 5 1600 but i bought the gigabyte b350m d3h i can only get 3.7ghz stable with prime95 running for an hour max temps 72c with stock cooler, i have a corsair h100i v2 waiting for the bracket to come in might achieve higher. Also future bios updates hopefully allow better stability.

I have a Corsair H100i V2 in storage, which might perform better. I hope future BIOS updates will improve stability. What voltage are you using at 3.7GHz? That person in the video would probably get sent that CPU by AMD. They’re likely sending him a better one, not just a 3.7ghz model. Otherwise, their review would be negative. They probably selected it specifically for him, as with most YouTube reviews they either get engineering samples or the chosen CPUs.
It’s possible they tested it before sending it to him. However, I’m not satisfied with my CPU at the store where I bought it and I can exchange it. It’s currently out of stock. But once I get it, I’ll check if it exceeds 3.8ghz.
I’m surprised they’d offer an exchange because overclocking isn’t guaranteed, and running at stock speeds is fine. In the UK, they’d probably tell me to go to hell if I asked that question.
