During the construction phase, I planned to launch the project in November. I adjusted all core overclocks to 4.2GHZ and left the board running at full speed. Eventually, I had more time to fine-tune the voltage settings. This system ran ESXI 7.0 with two GPUs—AMD RX480 8GB edition and an Nvidia 2070 Super (EVGA). It also included two keyboards and two mice. The machine could support two operating systems, allowing each to use different displays and be operated by separate devices. I had set it up and been using it since November. When switching to virtualization mode, I couldn’t easily check CPU or voltage temperatures except by rebooting and consulting BIOS settings. Besides that, I managed to gauge temperatures using the GPU and cooling fan readings from the AIO. I used a Corsair 280mm RGB cartridge and could control all the lighting effects in the virtual environment. However, I couldn’t adjust the RAM’s RGB colors. The Trident Royal RGB (4x16GB DDR4 3800) was the best option I found matching my requirements. After some adjustments, I installed an extra SSD and ran Windows 10 natively on the machine. Initially, it was running at 4.2GHZ with a voltage of 1.45V on the Vcore. During an Intel burn test, it handled 4GB RAM at 110°C. According to Ryzen Master, this exceeded the CPU’s specifications. The BIOS also reported stable temperatures at 67°C. All maximum readings were verified through an Intel burn test, which was the worst-case scenario. I also checked PBO and Autooverclock settings. Eventually, I reset the BIOS to default and confirmed normal temperatures and voltages. The peak temperature reached 87°C, but it operated efficiently at up to 180 watts. The machine earned a score of 9433 on MSE and 198 Gflops in Intel Burn Test. 3DMark Time Spy CPU scored 13901. Overall, the system performed well at 4.2GHz with 1.25V core, though the Intel test dropped to 175Gflops. Looking ahead, I suspect a potential AMD 3950X (4.15GHz, 1.20V) might be available. For now, I’m running an AMD X570 MSI CPU and have prepared for heavy use. When assembling, I anticipated pushing the board to its limits. So far, it has withstood the test. The only drawback is that the RGB on the board didn’t activate properly. After extensive tuning, we decided to play Civ 6 in LAN and Unreal Tournament 3 simultaneously for about 12 hours—with two people using the machine. I’m curious about the overclocking capabilities of the AMD 3950X chip itself: what speeds and voltages could be achieved?

The third generation overclocking tutorial highlights that a full-core boost is risky. A better approach is incremental boosting per core. I recommend reviewing the third-gen guide and aligning your settings with the R9 3900X specifications.

My 3950x operates at 4.35 GHz and 1.31 V (with 28V under load). I've seen suggestions to perform a stress test with PBO activated to check the voltage it uses. That value should match the safe operating range for this chip.

This setup isn't ideal for Ryzen. It's better to just turn on PBO and stop trying to force static voltages. The goal was to find a voltage around 1.285, but my tests show PBO isn't quite as effective as the overclock I achieved. Remember this machine doesn't use Windows—it runs ESXI. If you ran the chip at 3.5 GHz, setting all cores to overclock would push it to that speed. For maximum temps, I used an Intel burn test reaching 4.35 GHz, which felt safe. A 24/7 overclock isn't recommended because it could stress the chip beyond its limits. If you need higher performance, custom looping might be necessary for tasks like video rendering.
