I possess a fresh ultrawide setup with DisplayPort, and a second screen linked through HDMI. Recently, whenever the monitor switches to standby, my icons and window positions become disorganized. My system is configured not to sleep at all, but it does put the monitor to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity. When I return and log in, my windows appear in different locations (top left) and I must manually reposition them each time. This is inconvenient, especially since I rely on the monitor for daytime work with many open windows in precise spots. I've read about solutions on forums, such as the NVIDIA Control panel overriding EDID (available only with Quatro cards) and registry entries for a "Simulated" monitor, but my machine lacks the simulated option. I've also attempted clearing display settings and rebooting, but nothing resolves the issue. It seems the DisplayPort connection being put to sleep causes it to treat only one monitor as active, shifting everything to the second screen. While using DisplayFusion's Windows Location profiles helps a bit, some applications still fail to reposition correctly. I've tried PersistentWindows from GitHub, but it doesn't fix problems with programs that close or open new windows. I've also used a workaround from kangyu-california, yet it doesn't solve the issue for closed apps or new windows like Outlook. This causes significant frustration, as I waste time rearranging everything every time I disconnect. Please help—I'd appreciate it!

I'm not sure how to repair that, but one of the tools I rely on is this. It has a right-click restore/save option and works incredibly smoothly.

I understand, I've already tested many of these tools but still face the same problem. If a window is closed when I restore—like with Spotify—it keeps launching in the top-left even after I set DisplayFusion to always open. I'm starting to believe the only real solutions are: 1) Make sure my display never sleeps (it uses more power, not great), or 2) Remove the second monitor and just use one. I'm open to any suggestions if someone has a better way.

All sleep configurations are disabled on the screen, leaving just two choices. This Samsung Odyssey G9 isn’t a budget model, yet it keeps happening often.

At first, the issue appeared only with that particular Acer monitor and not with any other device I connected. Using the monitor linked to its HDMI port performed smoothly without issues, whereas for you it’s likely not feasible because your setup uses a G-Sync display needing DisplayPort. I attempted to remove registry entries for other monitors, as recommended by forum users, but the Windows reset would eventually occur. I discovered a tool called 'winredock' by manutalcual, intended to reorder windows after docking or changing monitors. I didn’t use it since I was on a work machine and preferred a tidy environment, but now it might help you. https://github.com/manutalcual/winredock

I've managed to configure DisplayFusion and Window profiles more effectively. My quick method is using WinKey plus NumPad0 for my work setup, which handles the most windows. There are still some issues though—certain apps like GOG Galaxy, Discord, and Spotify try to open in the top-left even when they aren't active. I'm still searching for a complete solution.

For programs that continue to reset their window positions, FancyZones is a useful tool from PowerToys. It receives frequent updates and can be found at the provided link. One of its features is the option to relocate newly created windows to their most recent zone.

FancyZones offers extensive customization, making it stand out from DisplayFusion. It provides numerous settings to tailor your experience. Regarding your question, the system typically locks you into a zone once selected, but it doesn't automatically revert to your last known location unless explicitly configured. You may need to adjust settings manually if you're unsure about the behavior.

Templates exist for zones, yet you also have the freedom to design your own zones at any location on your screen. For instance, when Discord is hidden from the system tray, clicking its icon restores it to view. FancyZones will bring you back to the most recent zone you set, regardless of whether you fully close and restart the application.
