To reset the CMOS you remove stored settings so the device remembers the correct configuration. You clear it to ensure a fresh start, prevent data loss, or fix persistent issues. It doesn’t alter the actual date and time—it just resets the internal memory used by the system.
By connecting a short to two pins on the board or removing the battery and allowing it to discharge, the BIOS settings are cleared. This can resolve system lockups that block access to the BIOS. It doesn’t occur every time, but when it does, it’s the only solution available.
