Adjust RAM speed for compatibility (3200 - 2666 MHz)
I’m preparing to enhance my setup with new parts: a motherboard, CPU, and RAM. Previously I used an MSI B360M PRO-VDH board with an i5-8600 CPU, 2400 MHz RAM (16 GB DDR4). Now I’m considering a Ryzen 7 3800X and plan to buy RAM at 3200 MHz. Because I’m on a tighter budget, I wanted memory with 3200 MHz compatibility. Can I downclock the RAM to match the i5-8600’s 2666 MHz limit? I’m interested in the G.Skill Trident Z RGB DDR4-3200mhz (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR, 16 GB). Please let me know your thoughts.
RAM is designed for a specific performance level. It usually functions properly at any speed lower than that rating. The motherboard determines the rate, while the RAM doesn't understand its true capabilities.
You can directly adjust the clock speed in the BIOS without any extra steps. The motherboard won’t automatically underclock your RAM; you control it manually.
