Hi guys, my name is Carlos, I’m from Mexico (English is not my native language) I’m kinda new to the ryzen experience and I’ve been running my 3600 at stock speeds for the past month, I started to mess a bit with the bios to see how far can I push my cpu to get better performance. I’m currently running using only PBO. I don’t see a difference in performance to be honest and I’ve decided to start messing with the overclock settings. I’m aiming for a modest 4.2ghz all core overclock but I’m kinda scared because of the rummors about degration in Zen 2 processors. I think I was able to get 4.2ghz all core at 1.3v using LLC medium and it seem to run just fine, but after further investigation I found that running that voltage and fixed frequencies might not be good for the cpu, then I found guys running their 3600 at 4.3 or even more at lower voltages. As you can see I’m not very experienced with Ryzen and overclocking, I just upgraded from a 6600k and overclocking is completely different, 7nm is waaaay different. I’m looking for advices and see how far can I push my ryzen without risking to shorten its lifespan. Btw, I was going to buy a brand new rtx 2070 super but I’ve decided to wait a little bit more for the new rtx 3xxx or big navi, that’s why I’m running only a gtx 1070. 4.2Ghz is too high for this chip. The boost clock equals 4.2Ghz, representing the top core speed in a single-core task. You won't reach that with all cores running at once. A stable 3.9 or 4.0Ghz across all cores is likely the best you can achieve, though boost itself counts as an optimization. The base clock stands at 3.6Ghz, so any result above that is an improvement.
I've worked with Zen before, but lately daily overclocking seems less useful. Once you input a specific voltage, the system locks it in place. This changes the average daily voltage from around 1.1 V to about 1.55 V (or whatever you set), especially when C&Q and C-States are active. When the multiplier is tweaked, it switches to OC mode and locks the voltage there as well. I've pushed my 1700X turbo to its limit without PBO, so I usually skip that step. It has a more noticeable effect on Zen+ and Zen2 versions, where the turbo behaves differently.
Based on what I've seen, using Precision Boost Overdrive seems to be the easiest way to improve performance without much effort. Many people think you won't notice a boost when overclocking a Ryzen CPU, but the video shows you can get a 30%-40% increase in some games, depending on your graphics card. This example used an R7 3700X, but it still supports the idea.
