This is my first time with a poster, so hello.
I recently acquired a 7700k from a friend and updated the BIOS to version 38xx. I included the original 7700k in the setup. The OS booted smoothly, recognized the CPU, idle temperatures were around 30°C, and during startup it didn’t exceed 70°C. Now it’s time to try overclocking.
This is when I encountered some issues. No matter what ratio I set—like 47 on all cores—the boot process was unusual. It would display a loading screen briefly, followed by a click sound from Pay, then the screen would flash for a moment before showing the loading again and booting normally. The frequency stayed below 4400, and the single-core performance reached 4500.
CPU-Z indicated a multiplier of 44x (range 8-47).
What I’ve tried so far:
- Using an older 3401 BIOS
- Performance and balanced plans
- Clearing the CMOS and reconfiguring
- Removing AI Suite 3 and AI Cleaned
- Applying configurations others used with a 7700k and Z170
- Clearing CMOS and adjusting only the ratio
- Turning off all power-saving features in UEFI

I’m running out of options. The only thing that comes to mind is possible conflicts from software or hardware, but some users have succeeded with Kaby Lake. Could there be a way to verify if it’s related to software before reinstalling Windows?

Previously, I was using a 6600k at 4.4W before the upgrade.
System details:
I7 7700k
Asus Maximus VIII hero
2x8GB RAM
2x 2.5” 256GB SSD RAID 0
Aorus 1080ti Extreme WB
ek x360 custom loop
650W 80 Gold PSU
Windows 10 Pro

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Sorry if my use of the term is wrong, if resetting means removing the button battery for 10 minutes, I've attempted this twice without success (I indicated it was cleared).

I'm sorry for not reading it thoroughly. It seems the problem isn't related to the stock increase settings. The concern lies with the bios.

I’m hoping it is, I’ve experimented with many configurations but nothing seems to work. With the 6600k I could simply tweak the ratio using everything set to auto from the default settings and achieved a successful overclock.
I don’t want to spend more on a z270 board, so I think I might be missing a setting in the BIOS that influences the Kaby Lake.

Yeah, I scored 1.3 for 4.7 which seems too high, and I didn’t reach 4.4. Maybe there’s an issue with the PSU?

When you perform the action, it doesn't work properly. The system won't start or load the operating system.

it starts up properly in windows, but in cpu-z it displays x44 (8 - 47) during high load, while only showing x45 at maximum.

Have you attempted removing and readding CPU z? Afterburner can display the speeds it reports while gaming.
